The final round of 2006 Quaife backed 1.9 205 Scholarship
took place in Holland on 4-5th Nov 2006. In total 19 members
of the 205 Challenge took on the cross channel event in a
variation of 205s and BMW challenge cars.
At the front of the field was Andy Bakers 200BHP modified
205, followed by 205 championship organiser Pat Flynn in his
BMW challenge car. However, the bulk of the UK entry came
from the 205 1.9 Scholarship cars headed up by Chris Reid/Ella
Flynn and Stefan Davis/Pat Cooper.
Although Reid was already crowned the Quaife Challenge champion
for 2006 he was also locked in a battle with Davis to secure
the prestigious fastest stage times league on this event.
Further down the field another year long battle would need
to be settled between Dominic Hodge and Mick Bradley who where
fighting for the seniors championship title.
The UK 205 Championship has a fantastic relationship with
the Holland event organisers due to the friendliness of the
members of the Dutch 205 Cup.
For the 2006 event 10 Dutch 205 crews where also battling
for their own title and 4 of the Dutch crews where in with
a shout of Dutch Cup Champion 2006 at the start, making this
their most competitive year.
The event itself attracted massive media attention largely
due to the fact that the Dutch President was co-driving in
car 1 but also the inclusion of the tremendously popular spectator
stage that take place round an industrial estate in Hengelo
center.
It is estimated that up to 10,000 spectators lined the route
of the Hengalo industrial estate stage and an additional treat
for them was to see Kev Furber’s 205 T16 E2 driven by
Andrew Metticot. This is the first time a T16 E2 had ever
been seen in Holland!
The entry looked like this and it was interesting to note
the 3 UK crews had recruited local Dutch co-drivers for this
event.
Start Of the Rally
From the start Andy Baker and Lee Burgess set the pace and
would never be beaten by any of the more standard 1.6, 1.9
or BMW in fact such was his pace that he finished the two
day event twelth overall and some three and a half minutes
infront of Stefan Davies and Pat Cooper who took his third
championship win in as many rallies. However, Chris Reid and
Ella Flynn had taken three fastest times before retiring half
way through day two and by doing so Reid had the concellation
of winning the fastest stage times league ahead of Davies.
Rory Hall and Gareth Roberts shocked everyone by taking second
1.9 205 narrowly beating Dominic Hodge and Dutch Co-Driver
Michelle Milivojevic by just seven seconds. On day two the
inspired 55 year old Hodge celebrated his birthday by setting
a string of top three Peugeot times. No one was happier than
Hodge and his Teleserve sponsor David to be celebrating the
achievement of his first ever podium place after three years
of trying, well done Dominic!
A fantastic battle had started on the ferry between Mike
Nippers and Jiggalo Gino Cook, these great friends had a personal
battle in their 1.6 205 that saw them fight tooth and nail
never being split by more than eight seconds on any stage.
The eventual winners Mike Nippers and Co-Driver Peter Davies
brought his tarmac race experience into play and took an impressive
overall placing to boot.
Just outside the top three was Austin McKinlay/Richard Walker
and Mick Bradley/Phill Pearce both thoroughly delighted to
get to the end of the event, they both described as a fantastic
experience that must be repeated. By finishing Bradley had
won his battle for the Seniors title and never stopped smiling.
Two additional crews didn’t make it to the finish but
both were allowed to enter a sprint rally on day two. Kit
and Tim Leigh went on to win their respective class in the
sprint event whilst Frazer Stannard retired as a result of
damage he had incurred from crashing out on the main event.
Frazer had some reason to celebrate as his early pace was
enough to earn him his first ever joint fastest stage time!
205 Challenge Coordinator Pat Flynn had brought his own BMW
Challenge car to compete against two of the front-runners
of the BMW Championship. Unfortunately Steve and Ben Cressy
retired with gearbox failure on stage two whilst Pat and C-Driver
Mark Mason also retired mid way through day two but not without
impressing the spectators and local BMW drivers with his sideways
to victory style. Andy and Lisa Fox were the only remaining
UK BMW but rather than cruise round to an easy victory they
prove themselves as worthy ambassadors for the UK teams by
regularly matching times with their Dutch counter parts and
the front running 205.
Hankook BMW
1 - Andrew Fox (GB) / Liza Fox (GB) (M/V) - 01:23:10
Dutch 205 Cup
1 - Michael Coers (NL) / Michiel Uittien (NL) (M/M) - 01:27:48
2 - Willem Hemink (NL) / Bastiaan Stokman (NL) (M/M) - + 0:44

+ 09:55
4 - Gtz Pfauder (NL) / Berto Plomp (NL) (M/M) - + 11:45
The four way battle for the Dutch 205 cup was eventually
sorted on the very last stage of the rally when local drivers
Michael Coers and Michiel Uittien secured a position high
enough to take the championship title! Michael and Michiel
wanted to express their gratitude to the UK teams who helped
them fix their 205 and keeping them in the event thus allowing
them to win.
